Technical market information for educational purposes; not investment advice.

What is the funding rate?

The funding rate is a periodic payment exchanged between traders holding positions in perpetual futures contracts. Unlike traditional futures, perpetual contracts have no expiry date, so they need a mechanism to keep their price anchored to the spot price. That mechanism is the funding rate.

Who pays whom?

When the rate is positive, the perpetual contract trades above spot: long traders pay short traders. When the rate is negative, the opposite happens: the perpetual trades below spot and short traders pay longs. This exchange nudges the contract price back toward spot.

How often is it paid?

Most exchanges settle funding every 8 hours (typically at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC), although some assets or platforms use different intervals. The figures in this table are shown per funding interval, unless you switch to the annualized view.

How is it calculated?

The rate combines two components: a base interest rate (set by the exchange) and a premium index, which measures the difference between the perpetual contract price and the reference price. In simplified terms, the exchange computes a weighted average of the premium index and applies a clamped adjustment relative to the interest rate. Each platform publishes its own methodology, so small differences between exchanges can exist for the same asset: that is exactly why this table shows several exchanges and their average.

What is the annualized rate?

Funding is paid per interval. The annualized view multiplies that rate by the number of intervals in a year based on each exchange's real period: paying every 8 hours means 3 a day (factor 3 × 365 = 1095), and every 4 hours means 6 a day (factor 6 × 365 = 2190). For example, +0.0100% per interval is about +10.95% annualized on an 8-hour contract, or +21.90% on a 4-hour one. It is an indicative estimate that assumes the rate stays constant —which in practice it does not, funding changes continuously— and is meant to compare magnitudes, not as a forecast.

Why is the annualized view the fair way to compare exchanges?

Because not all exchanges settle funding at the same frequency: the same asset may pay every 8 hours on one platform and every 4 on another. Comparing the “per interval” rates without accounting for this would be misleading (a rate every 4 hours weighs twice as much as the same rate every 8 hours). That is why, for the annualized view and the average, this tool normalizes each value using each exchange's real interval. Hover over a cell to see the exact interval (for example, 4h or 8h) that was applied.

Why do some assets show the same "capped" value?

Exchanges apply a maximum and minimum limit to funding (for example, ±0.01% per interval on many Binance contracts). When demand pushes the rate beyond that limit, it stays fixed at the cap. That is why, in the annualized view, several assets may show exactly the same value (such as +10.95%): they have reached that maximum. It is not an error, but the normal behaviour of each platform's limit.

What does the asset count mean?

Above the table you can see how many of the listed assets currently have a positive average funding rate and how many have a negative one. It is simply a count of the current state of the derivatives market, with no interpretation or recommendation.

What does the trend chart show?

The trend column plots how each asset's funding rate has evolved over the last few days, based on the historical data published by the exchange. It lets you see at a glance whether funding has been mostly positive, negative, or has recently changed sign.

Can I sort the table and get alerts?

Yes. You can click any column header to sort the assets by that column (for example, from the most negative average to the most positive). And if you enable alerts, your browser will notify you when an asset crosses the thresholds you define (gear button). There are three combinable watches: the average funding threshold per interval (±0.05% by default, always active); an optional Binance open-interest change threshold (ΔOI 1h) which, if set, requires funding and ΔOI to be met at once; and an optional, independent daily divergence threshold, which fires on its own when the funding differential across exchanges exceeds your value. You can also choose which assets to watch. Alerts work while the tab stays open and your settings are saved only in your browser (localStorage): this site receives and stores nothing.

How do you read it?

A sustained, strongly positive rate often signals a market crowded with leveraged longs (excess optimism), while a prolonged negative rate reflects a predominance of shorts (excess pessimism). Analysts rarely look at funding in isolation; they combine it with other data such as open interest, volume and price action.

What is the funding divergence across exchanges?

The Divergence column shows, for each asset, the difference between the highest and lowest funding among the listed exchanges. Since each venue pays at a different frequency (every 1, 4 or 8 hours), per-interval rates cannot be subtracted raw: they are first normalized to a common time base. The annualized view shows the divergence in % per year, and the per-interval view shows its daily equivalent (annual ÷ 365), which answers the intraday question "how much does this differential add up to in one day?". The 24-hour window is also the only one where every interval fits exactly: 3 payments of 8h, 6 of 4h and 24 of 1h. Both figures are the same data on different scales and the asset ranking does not change. Hover over the cell to see which two exchanges mark the extremes. dYdX 0.00% values are excluded from the calculation —they are common due to the design of its funding mechanism— to avoid artificially inflating the divergence. As educational context: funding differences across venues are the basis of so-called funding arbitrage strategies, which aim to collect the differential by holding opposite positions on two markets; in practice, fees, slippage, execution risks, each exchange's different payment times and the constantly changing funding can shrink or erase that differential. This column only describes the current difference; it does not flag any opportunity nor constitute a recommendation.

What is the OI/MCap ratio (open interest over market cap)?

On the open interest tab, the OI/MCap column divides the aggregated open interest of the 5 listed exchanges by the asset's market capitalization. It puts the size of the futures market in relation to the size of the asset itself: Bitcoin's open interest will always be huge in absolute dollars, yet small relative to its market cap, while on some smaller assets the derivatives market can be proportionally much larger. A high ratio describes large futures activity relative to the asset's spot market; a low ratio, the opposite. Methodology: open interest is the sum of Binance, Bybit, OKX, Hyperliquid and dYdX (other venues are not included, so the full-market ratio would be somewhat higher), and the market capitalization comes from CoinGecko's public API and is refreshed hourly. It is a descriptive relative-size figure, not a signal or a recommendation.

What is the open interest change (ΔOI) and how is it read alongside funding?

The ΔOI 1h column shows how much Binance open interest changed between the last two hourly data points published by the exchange, and the OI 24h mini-chart plots that series over the last 24 hours. The mechanics are simple: if open interest rises, more contracts are being opened than closed; if it falls, the opposite. Read together with funding, it describes who is paying for the positions being opened or closed: with rising open interest and positive funding, new positions accumulate while longs pay to hold them; with rising open interest and negative funding, shorts are the ones paying; and a fast drop in open interest reflects net position closing, whether from profit taking or liquidations. Analysts use this combination as derivatives-market context, always alongside other data. This tool shows both figures separately and without directional labels: describing the data is not the same as predicting price or suggesting any action. The change is computed from Binance data only (each exchange measures its open interest its own way) and comes from the history the exchange itself publishes.

Data sources

Values are pulled directly from the official public APIs of three centralized exchanges (CEX) —Binance, Bybit and OKX— and two on-chain decentralized exchanges (DEX) —Hyperliquid and dYdX—, and are updated periodically. This live funding rate table shows technical market information for educational and informational purposes. The annualized view is an indicative estimate, not a forecast. Nothing shown here constitutes financial advice or an investment recommendation. Trading cryptocurrencies, and leveraged products in particular, carries a high risk of loss.
