This false information came from an X post made by conservative user @EvanAKilgore, which had no correction or warning about the misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The ballot deadline has already passed in many states across the country.<br><br>1. Washington<br><br>What is going to happen in these states now that Joe Biden has dropped out?<\/p>&mdash; Evan Kilgore \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@EvanAKilgore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvanAKilgore\/status\/1815113624752406673?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things get worse when Grok, in his \u201cFunny Mode,\u201d repeats the incorrect information and source with inappropriate humorous comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Grok joked, \u201cSo if you\u2019re thinking about running for president in one of these states, you might want to check if there\u2019s a write-in voting option. Or, you know, travel back in time to before the deadlines passed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another response, the chatbot implied that President Joe Biden\u2019s name couldn\u2019t be replaced on these states\u2019 ballots because the deadlines had already passed. However, these claims are completely false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The reality\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Biden was the presumptive nominee until he announced he would not seek a second term. In reality, the Democratic Party will choose its nominee via virtual roll call voting before its convention, and states don\u2019t begin printing ballots until after both conventions. Additionally, in Minnesota, the deadline for voting is not until August 26, flatly debunking Grok\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fact checks by reputable media outlets, such as Politifact, have refuted these claims. Politifact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2024\/jul\/23\/instagram-posts\/fact-check-post-says-there-are-9-states-where-bide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rated a similar claim<\/a>, with the same list of nine states, as \u201cFalse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steve Simon also commented on the difficulties encountered in communicating the misinformation to X. According to Simon, his team\u2019s attempts to contact a media relations representative for X were unsuccessful, and the response they received was unsatisfactory and concerning. \u201cThey received what I can only verbalize as the equivalent of a shrug,\u201d Simon told the Star Tribune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Minneapolis Star Tribune attempted to get comment from X, they only received a short, evasive response that read, \u201cBusy now, check back later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Actions to take<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid misinformation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islabit.com\/en\/168995\/what-is-doxxing-and-how-can-you-protect-yourself-on-social-networks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islabit.com\/en\/171663\/best-telegram-artificial-intelligence-ai-chatbots-in-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chatbots<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islabit.com\/en\/category\/internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internet<\/a> and other media, you need to develop a critical and conscious approach to the information you consume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, verify the source of information before trusting or sharing it. This involves checking the credibility of the author, the date of publication and whether the information has been corroborated by reliable sources. Fact-checking platforms, such as Politifact or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Snopes<\/a>, can be useful in confirming the veracity of the data. Also, be skeptical of sensationalist claims or claims that seem too good or bad to be true, as these are common characteristics of misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, diversify information sources. Relying exclusively on a single outlet or platform can limit perspective and increase susceptibility to misinformation. If you consume news and data from a variety of sources, including international and local, you can get a more balanced and complete view of events. Use news aggregation tools and follow journalists and experts from different fields to gain a broader and more nuanced understanding of the issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, foster critical thinking and media literacy to combat misinformation.
