At the beginning of the last decade, if your Minecraft match showed something out of place or a strange figure in the horizon, the chaos of Herobrine arose. The inexplicable Minecraft bugs regarding Herobrine or Him became one of the most popular creepypasts of the Mojang game.
The Bigfoot of Minecraft and the inexplicable bugs it carries is part of the myth in videogames. Even when the creators of Minecraft denied the existence of the monster, it’s still there for the community.
Minecraft inexplicable bugs at the beginning
The first years of Minecraft were very different. Now the game it’s a transmedia success with thousands of mods and game modes. The open world experience was mysterious and full of surprises. Most of the gamers didn’t know which were the limits of the simulation. Inside the darkness of a cave or during the blackest nights, it was a fully immersive experience. It was easy to forget that you were only playing a pixilated cartoonish game.
It was a matter of time before the 4chan forums got a creepy post. In a recently started match, a player saw a mysterious figure clouded in the mist. It was a model of the player’s avatar but totally still. When he tried to chase after him, it vanished. Soon after, the presence of that character started to manifest. There were strange tunnels created by someone of the same features.
The first encounter was followed by similar reports. 4chan and YouTube were full of horror stories about this Bigfoot. Some of the tales spoke of a cursed cave that extinguished the torches. There was an unsettling video with a video caption where two white eyes were seen in the darkness of a cavern.
The Herobrine myth
One of the inexplicable bugs of Minecraft gave origin to Herobrine. The story grew and influenced other creepypastas such as Disk 13 on the 1.0.14 update. Notch, one of the creators of Minecraft was fully aware of the urban legend. He introduced more lore with a special item you could only get by killing creepers and skeleton. The Disk 13 played an intentionally eerie music that became soundtrack for the creepypastas.
Some players started investigating to find out the place of origin of Herobrine: the first appearance of the myth. It was a fruitless endeavor as they couldn’t confirm or deny Herobrine existence.
In order to put an end to the myth, Notch made a wink in the notes of an update patch. He wrote “Removed Herobrine”. However, it didn’t work out. Even today Mojang without Notch at the head keeps using Herobrine as an internal joke. The most recent update 1.21.5 still includes the famous line “Removed Herobrine”
Another explanation is that Herobrine is the representation of the internal and inexplicable bugs Minecraft had at the beginning. The possibilities of finding a duplicated Steve and the imagination of the players made the rest.
