What are these historic Bitcoin wallets?
They are Bitcoin addresses publicly documented for their role in the network's history: Satoshi Nakamoto's genesis block, the Mt. Gox hack funds, court seizures such as Silk Road, publicly acknowledged exchange treasuries, or large dormant wallets from the early years. This page checks their live balance and activity straight from the blockchain.
Where do the labels come from?
Only from verifiable public sources, linked on each row: court documents, official announcements or widely corroborated historical records. We use no rumours or unsourced third-party attributions. Even so, the actual ownership of an address is only known to whoever holds its keys.
What counts as "activity"?
Any transaction touching the address, including "dust" deposits (symbolic amounts third parties send to famous addresses). To keep the log meaningful, the movement list only records balance changes of at least 0.01 BTC. For many of these wallets the relevant fact is precisely their stillness: years without a single outgoing transaction.
Methodology
The state is checked in rotating batches every few minutes against the public mempool.space API and stored in our own database, which keeps the history of detected movements since monitoring began. If an address has pending transactions in the mempool, it is flagged as "moving now". For the latest transaction we also record its net effect on the wallet and the main counterparty: the address with the largest amount on the opposite side (the origin for an inflow, the destination for an outflow). A Bitcoin transaction can have many inputs and outputs, so this is a factual summary of the largest flow, not an identity attribution; the "view transaction" link shows the full detail on the explorer.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns these addresses?
Whoever the linked sources document (courts, official announcements, historical records). Effective ownership is only known to whoever controls the private keys; labels describe the public attribution, not an absolute certainty.
What does it mean when one of these wallets "moves"?
That a confirmed transaction changed its balance by at least 0.01 BTC. It is a technical fact of the chain: this page records and describes it, without attributing intent or consequences.
Why does the genesis address keep receiving bitcoin?
Since 2009 people have sent small symbolic amounts to the first address in history as a tribute. Those coins are considered most likely unrecoverable, because the genesis block reward is unspendable and no outgoing funds have ever moved from that address.
How often is the data updated?
The displayed state refreshes every few minutes. Addresses are re-checked in rotating batches, so each one is queried several times per hour without straining the public source.
Can I get an alert if one of them moves?
Yes: the alerts button uses your browser's notifications while the tab stays open. The preference is stored only in your browser; the server receives and stores none of your data.
