OpenAI goes back to its roots with an open source free GPT that runs locally on your laptop. It’s not GPT-5, but the new free gpt-oss can run in any portable PC with a mid-range graphic card. The new OpenAI launch for gpt-oss includes two language models.
GPT-OSS-120b is very similar to 04-mini according to basic reasoning tests. It can run on a standalone CPU with 80 GB. For example, the H100 AI chip from Nvidia. The GPT-OSS-20b model gives you results similar to OpenAI o3-mini and it can run on GPU devices with 16 GB of memory. This means you can run i ton a RTX 5000 or RTX 4000. There are even older generation graphic cards that will run GPT-OSS-20b. According to OpenAI you can even run it on a laptop with 16 GB of RAM sharing it with a GPU.
GPT-OSS the free weapon from OpenAI against DeepSeek
Both new OpenAI models surpass DeepSeek R1 in different benchmark tests. The main objective of GPT-OSS models is to compete with the DeepSeek alternative. Both GPT-OSS local models are also an answer for developers that asked for it.
OpenAI indicates that both models are very useful to create AI agents but only text based ones. You won’t be able to create images, videos or music using GPT-OSS.
These new open source models will include tools to make Internet searches and execute code through Python. You will also be able to connect them to an OpenAI cloud model to increase the capabilities of GPT-OSS language models.
The new open source gpt-OSS languages are distributed using Apache 2.0 license. This means you can monetize and use freely for a professional project without having to purchase a license from OpenAI.
However, Sam Altman’s company won’t reveal the data used for gpt-oss training. This is a strategy to avoid any legal problema in the future. There are several pending trials for using copyright protected content for GPT training.
The gpt-oss 120b includes 117.000 million parameters and it uses 5.100 per token. On the other hand, the gpt-osss 20b reaches 21.000 million parameters and 3.600 per token.
Open source AI returns to the center of the scene
Although performance tests are on the same level that o4-mini and o3-mini, OpenAI recognizes that gpt-oss models produce more hallucinations that cloud models. The gpt-oss have been trained using text data in English and focusing on STEM, codification and general knowledge.
The new gpt-oss 120b and 20b are already available for free download for everyone. You can download them from Hugging Face website. Both models are designed for developers and you can access the open source code and integrate it on your apps.
Although DeepSeek R1 already has a competitor from the OpenAI family, it’s also important to note that R2 is coming soon. The fight between DeepSeek and ChatGPT is getting fiercer as time goes by and the developers are working on several new strategies to improve and offer a wide variety of AI tools for users worldwide.
